Dynamic Simulation of the Jaw and Chewing Muscles for Maxillofacial Surgery

چکیده
The need for simulation in medical environments increases with the complexity and risks of operations. Especially exact geometric planning is one of the main problems a surgeon has to deal with. The goal of our research is the development of a graphical simulation of the human mastication system. Therefore, we are developing an integrated model of the jaw by parameterizing the bones (maxilla and mandible) and modeling the motion capabilities as well as the mastication muscles. The main focus of this paper is the introduction of a kinematic model of the temporomandibular joint and the modeling of the mastication muscles. The kinematic model describes the geometrical and analytical movement of the jaw by specially defined axes. By modifying the axes or the geometrical model of the mandible, a surgeon can get a first impression of the post-operative result of e.g. a repositioning. Through integration of the muscles and muscle forces, we can even come to a dynamic simulation of the whole mastication system.

Simulation of jaw-movements for the musculoskeletal diagnoses.
Simulations of static and dynamic aspects of the functionality of the human body are getting more important as the complexity of operations increases. The preoperative planning of maxillofacial operations like the repositioning of the jaw is an example for such operation. Here, but also in other medical fields, simulation can help to estimate the results of a procedure or can facilitate the dia...

The author pays tribute to the "Grandfather" of modern oral microbiology. This review is designed not only to serve as a timely and comprehensive synthesis of our current knowledge of craniofacial tissue engineering, but also to identify immediate challenges in this dynamic field. The authors systematically review the available literature to determine the clinical efficacy and safety of biodegr...
متن کاملA Bilateral Pediculated Palatal Periosteal Connective Tissue Flap for Coverage of Large Bone Grafts in the Anterior Maxillary Region
Introduction: Coverage of bone grafts is very important in reconstructive surgery. In edentulous alveolar ridges this coverage is particularly important for supporting dental prostheses. Here we present the case of a patient with a large deficient maxillary anterior region that was reconstructed with a bilateral palatal submucosal periosteal connective tissue flap: a soft tissue reserve for up...
متن کاملGlossectomy in the severe maxillofacial vascular malformation with jaw deformity: a rare case report
In the field of oral-maxillofacial surgery, vascular malformations present in various forms. Abnormalities in the size of the tongue by vascular malformations can cause mandibular prognathism and skeletal deformity. The risk in surgical treatment for patients with vascular malformation is high, due to bleeding from vascular lesions. We report a rare case of macroglossia that was treated by part...
متن کاملEvaluation of jaw and neck muscle activities while chewing using EMG-EMG transfer function and EMG-EMG coherence function analyses in healthy subjects
This study aims to quantitatively clarify the physiological features in rhythmically coordinated jaw and neck muscle EMG activities while chewing gum using EMG-EMG transfer function and EMG-EMG coherence function analyses in 20 healthy subjects. The chewing side masseter muscle EMG signal was used as the reference signal, while the other jaw (non-chewing side masseter muscle, bilateral anterior...
